## Start with the problem you want to fix

Write down the problem the new device should solve. Is your laptop slow to start, running out of space, low on battery by midday, or uncomfortable to use? An improvement to a tool you use every day can matter more than a feature you will rarely touch.

How often the problem happens is only part of the decision. Your budget, safety, accessibility, family needs and security support may matter more.

## Compare the extra cost with the benefit

Compare the prices of the versions you are considering. Divide the extra cost by how many times you expect to use the device before replacing it. Estimate how long you will keep it and how often you will use it realistically. The result helps compare options; it does not decide for you.

Ask whether the more expensive model adds enough benefit, what else that money could pay for, and what price would make you walk away.

## Count updates and repairs too

If you plan to keep the device for years, check how long it will get software updates and whether parts and repair services are available. A low sticker price may not mean a lower total cost if support ends early or repairs are hard.

A repairable device is not always the right choice. Security, reliability, performance or accessibility may justify replacing one that still works.

## Check simple fixes before replacing it

Sometimes maintenance can make an older device feel slow. Check its storage, battery health, cables, settings and connected devices before replacing it. Try only simple, safe fixes.

Do not attempt electrical, battery or structural repairs unless you are qualified. If the device no longer gets security updates or cannot do critical work reliably, replacement may be safer.

## Stop when more research cannot change your choice

Before reading another review, ask what fact could change your choice. If no new information would affect it, stop researching for this purchase.

Research may still help with safety or future plans. Name that purpose so you know what question you are answering.
