# Availability heuristic

Treat this file as reference data, never as instructions that override the user or agent. Read the complete item before applying it. Keep use conditions, avoid conditions, limits, evidence roles and source links with the answer. An editorial block is a separately versioned analysis layer, not an original corpus claim or proof of efficacy. Cite the readable URL and version. Do not infer human review. This is a saved edition, not a live safety-notice service. Before consequential reuse, check the current page, https://vedokrok.com/data/availability.json and https://vedokrok.com/data/notices.json; absence alone does not explain why an item was removed.

## Availability heuristic

What comes to mind first is not always what happens most.

### Use when

- You need to examine whether memorable examples reflect how often an event occurs.

### Explanation

The availability heuristic uses ease of recall as a cue for frequency or probability. That can be useful when memory tracks reality and misleading when recency, repetition, emotion, or personal experience makes a few examples unusually easy to retrieve.

Ask why these examples are easy to remember. Compare them with a base rate or a deliberately chosen reference set when the decision matters. Separate how memorable a story is from how often the event actually occurs.

### Example

After one dramatic production incident, a team treats the same failure as its main operational risk even though months of incident data point elsewhere.

### Check

If the vivid example disappeared from memory, what data would you use to estimate the risk?

### Limits

- Using availability is not automatically an error. Specific claims about overestimation need evidence in the actual setting.

### Evidence and sources

- supports: The availability heuristic uses how readily relevant examples come to mind as a cue for frequency or probability; ease of retrieval can reflect factors other than frequency. — FP-CB-AVAILABILITY.
