Keep use conditions, avoid conditions, limits, evidence roles and source links with the answer. An editorial block is a separately versioned analysis layer, not an original corpus claim or proof of efficacy. Cite the readable URL and version. Do not infer human review. ## Study as if you will teach, then actually teach

Teaching works better as a learning method when it changes how you study before you start explaining.

### Use when

- You need to understand material well enough to explain, apply or defend it rather than merely recognize it on the page.

### Avoid when

- Teaching is not a substitute for retrieval practice, worked examples, deliberate practice or expert feedback when those fit the skill better. The evidence is heterogeneous and mostly concerns knowledge learning, so do not assume the same effect for high-pressure motor execution or every age group.

### Explanation

Choose a real teaching task before you study: who will hear the explanation and what should they understand afterward? Learn with that responsibility in mind, then close or minimize the source and teach the idea in your own structure. Do not stop at preparing a neat explanation. A 2024 meta-analysis found a benefit when teaching followed explicit preparation to teach, while teaching after ordinary study showed no reliable pooled benefit; actual teaching also added value beyond preparation alone.

### Steps

1. Name the audience and the one thing they should be able to understand or do afterward.
2. Study while selecting the key ideas, links, examples and likely points of confusion.
3. Put the source aside and teach the material from your own structure rather than reading notes aloud.
4. Mark any point where you cannot explain why, how or when the idea applies.
5. Repair those gaps from the source, then explain the weak section again and test yourself on a changed example.

### Example

A consultant learning a new process does not just reread documentation. They prepare a ten-minute explanation for a colleague, teach the flow without copying the page, then reopen the source only for the steps they could not justify clearly.

### Check

After teaching, you can reconstruct the idea and handle a changed example without leaning on the original wording.

### Limits

- Teaching is not a substitute for retrieval practice, worked examples, deliberate practice or expert feedback when those fit the skill better. The evidence is heterogeneous and mostly concerns knowledge learning, so do not assume the same effect for high-pressure motor execution or every age group.

### Evidence and sources

- supports: A 2024 meta-analysis of 39 studies found that teaching after studying with a teaching expectancy produced a learning benefit of g = 0.48, 95% CI [0.34, 0.63], while teaching after studying without that expectancy did not significantly differ from zero, g = -0.02, 95% CI [-0.14, 0.11]. — RS-1A3BF1A9C5E647BD4E64. This is a meta-analytic moderator result across varied tasks and designs. It supports studying with an explicit teaching goal before teaching, not a claim that every teaching activity improves every kind of learning. (Abstract)
- supports: In an additional meta-analysis of 14 studies, actually teaching after preparing to teach outperformed merely preparing to teach, g = 0.38, 95% CI [0.17, 0.60]. — RS-1A3BF1A9C5E647BD4E64. The result supports completing the teaching activity after preparation, but it does not establish the best duration, audience or format for an individual learner. (Abstract)
- supports: A 2019 meta-analysis of 28 studies estimated learning effects of g = 0.35 for preparing to teach and g = 0.56 for teaching after preparing to teach compared with ordinary study without teaching expectancy. — RS-C24946CDB7FF86F8CE1A. The study set was relatively small and heterogeneous, and most samples were age 18 or older. The pooled estimates should not be treated as guaranteed gains for every learner or subject.
