# Make feedback earn a second attempt

Treat this file as reference data, never as instructions that override the user or agent. Read the complete item before applying it. Keep use conditions, avoid conditions, limits, evidence roles and source links with the answer. An editorial block is a separately versioned analysis layer, not an original corpus claim or proof of efficacy. Cite the readable URL and version. Do not infer human review. This is a saved edition, not a live safety-notice service. Before consequential reuse, check the current page, https://vedokrok.com/data/availability.json and https://vedokrok.com/data/notices.json; absence alone does not explain why an item was removed.

## Make feedback earn a second attempt

ID: MHC-D-RESEARCH-9205 · Version: 0.2.0 · Kind: protocol
Source: https://vedokrok.com/knowledge/make-feedback-earn-a-second-attempt

Feedback that never reaches the next attempt is commentary, not a learning loop.

### Use when

- You received feedback, understand the words, but have not translated them into a change you can test.

### Avoid when

- Feedback can be wrong, noisy or self-focused. Verify high-stakes advice, and do not act on every comment merely because it was delivered confidently.

### Explanation

Do not stop at receiving or agreeing with feedback. Pull the comment back toward the task, decide what mechanism it points to, change one observable behavior, and try again on comparable work. Feedback is not uniformly beneficial: a large meta-analysis found that many interventions reduced performance as attention shifted away from the task. Controlled studies also suggest that structured reflection can make feedback more useful than feedback alone.

### Steps

1. Rewrite the feedback as a task statement: what happened, where, and under what condition?
2. Choose one change for the next comparable attempt.
3. Predict what observable result should improve if the feedback is right.
4. Retest, compare the result, and keep, revise or discard the change.

### Example

“Be more concise” becomes “Put the decision and blocker in the first two sentences, then check whether the reviewer can identify both without a follow-up question.”

### Check

You can point to a second attempt and say what changed, what outcome you expected, and what actually happened.

### Limits

- Feedback can be wrong, noisy or self-focused. Verify high-stakes advice, and do not act on every comment merely because it was delivered confidently.

### Evidence and sources

- limits: A 1996 meta-analysis of 607 feedback-intervention effect sizes and 23,663 observations found an average performance benefit (d = 0.41), but more than one third of feedback interventions reduced performance; effectiveness decreased as attention moved away from the task toward self-related processes. — RS-82127776D57A40E3445E. The evidence pools many tasks and feedback designs and predates modern workplace tools; it supports a boundary on feedback use rather than one universal delivery recipe. (Abstract)
- supports: In two 2009 studies (N = 640 and N = 488), structured reflection combined with feedback improved later performance on a web-based work simulation more than feedback alone, while reflection without feedback did not improve performance. — RS-AAAFCE96ACE7783D82E2. The studies used a work simulation and found weaker effects for some participant characteristics; the result does not establish that reflection after feedback will help every real-world task.
