# Expose the default before you accept a consequential choice

Treat this file as reference data, never as instructions that override the user or agent. Read the complete item before applying it. Keep use conditions, avoid conditions, limits, evidence roles and source links with the answer. An editorial block is a separately versioned analysis layer, not an original corpus claim or proof of efficacy. Cite the readable URL and version. Do not infer human review. This is a saved edition, not a live safety-notice service. Before consequential reuse, check the current page, https://vedokrok.com/data/availability.json and https://vedokrok.com/data/notices.json; absence alone does not explain why an item was removed.

## Expose the default before you accept a consequential choice

Doing nothing is still a choice when somebody else designed what doing nothing means.

### Use when

- A form, app, workplace process or contract has already selected an option for you and the choice has meaningful cost, privacy, time or commitment consequences.

### Avoid when

- Do not turn every harmless preset into a research project. Escalate the scrutiny with the stakes, irreversibility and switching cost; legal, medical or safety-critical choices may require specialist guidance beyond a choice-architecture check.

### Explanation

Defaults can materially shift decisions, even though their effect varies by setting. Before accepting a consequential preset, make the architecture visible: name the selected option, what happens if you leave it untouched, the realistic alternatives and the cost of switching. Then judge the options against your objective rather than treating the preset as neutral or recommended by definition.

### Checklist

- What exactly happens if I do nothing?
- Who selected this default, and what might it optimize for?
- What are the realistic alternatives?
- What friction or loss appears if I switch?
- Which option best fits my actual objective?

### Example

A new tool enables broad data sharing by default. Before clicking through setup, compare that preset with the narrower sharing modes and choose from the privacy outcome you want, not from the fact that one box arrived checked.

### Check

You can state the default, at least one alternative and the consequence of doing nothing before committing.

### Limits

- Do not turn every harmless preset into a research project. Escalate the scrutiny with the stakes, irreversibility and switching cost; legal, medical or safety-critical choices may require specialist guidance beyond a choice-architecture check.

### Evidence and sources

- supports: A meta-analysis of 58 default studies with 73,675 participants found a substantial average effect of preselecting an option on what people chose, alongside large variation across studies. — RS-6BB3DA085AF8F4582AB6. The average effect does not tell you how strongly one specific default will influence one specific person or context. (Abstract and General discussion)
- supports: The default meta-analysis found that effectiveness varied with context and with mechanisms such as perceived endorsement or status quo, so a preset option should not be treated as behaviorally neutral. — RS-6BB3DA085AF8F4582AB6. The identified moderators explain only part of the heterogeneity and should not be used as a deterministic model of individual choice. (Moderator analyses and General discussion)
