## Act out simple action phrases to remember them

ID: MHC-D-RESEARCH-9313 · Version: 0.1.0 · Kind: protocol

Give an action phrase a movement that matches its meaning.

### Use when

- You are learning words or short phrases that describe actions you can safely perform or mime.

### Avoid when

- Skip movements that are unsafe, painful or inaccessible. Remembering individual actions does not establish their correct order, technique or safe use in a demanding task.

### Explanation

Perform the represented action while learning the phrase. This can help memory compared with reading alone. The evidence concerns remembering action material; it does not establish mastery of an entire procedure. Match the movement to the meaning, then check recall later.

### Steps

1. Choose a short phrase describing a safe, simple action.
2. Perform or mime that action while reading or hearing the phrase.
3. Later, recall the phrase without the prompt, then check it against the original.

### Example

For “fold the paper,” fold a sheet as you learn the phrase. Later, write the phrases you remember and check for missing or changed words.

### Check

Correct recall shows which items you remembered. It does not prove that enactment caused the result or that you can carry out a whole procedure correctly.

### Limits

- Skip movements that are unsafe, painful or inaccessible. Remembering individual actions does not establish their correct order, technique or safe use in a demanding task.

### Evidence and sources

- supports: A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis covering 145 behavioral studies found a large average memory advantage for physically enacting action material compared with control conditions, while study design and comparator materially changed the effect size. — roberts-macleod-fernandes-enactment-meta-2022. Claim basis: research_synthesis. Claim limit: Effects differed by comparator and design, and publication-bias sensitivity analyses reduced the estimate. Episodic memory for action material does not establish complex sequence learning or expert performance.

Source history: Selected behavioral methods, results and limitations in the author-hosted paper were inspected. The 145-study behavioral analysis concerned healthy adults and episodic memory; its comparators and designs varied. No complete-paper review, patient recommendation, complex-sequence mastery or independent reanalysis is claimed.
Agent scope review, 2026-10-11: Selected Roberts behavioral synthesis/results/bias sensitivity and Sivashankar methods/results support action-item recall compared with reading. Comparator and design vary. Recorded observation is not a live-versus-video comparison; no complex procedure mastery or patient advice is inferred. (Behavioral inclusion criteria; Meta-Analytic Results; Publication Bias; Table 4.)
- limits: In an online undergraduate experiment, action words were recalled better after meaningful enactment than after air-writing or reading. The enactment advantage was smaller in a separate group watching recorded actions. — sivashankar-lui-fernandes-actions-2023. Claim basis: primary_study. Claim limit: The outcome was word recall after a short distractor. The study did not compare video observation with in-person observation or test mastery of a multistep procedure.

Source history: Selected methods, results and discussion concern free recall of action words after a short distractor in online undergraduate participants. Performing and watching recorded actions were compared; video versus in-person observation was not experimentally compared. No ordered-procedure or expert-performance outcome was tested.
