Close a meeting with real commitments
A tidy summary must not invent agreement.
Before you use it
- Use when
- A meeting produces work or decisions that need follow-through.

A template to use
Decision and relevant reason: ___. Action and expected output: ___. Agreed owner and date, or explicitly unassigned: ___. Open question and next decision point: ___.
Why it matters
Record the decision, the expected output, the accepted owner and the date. Keep proposed dates and unassigned work visible as proposals. Invite relevant participants to correct material misunderstandings. This is a record of what was agreed, not a device for turning silence into consent.
An example
Tuesday was suggested for a report, but nobody accepted ownership. The summary says “date proposed; owner unassigned.”
Check your result
Can a participant tell which commitments were accepted and which questions still need a decision?
Keep this limit in mind
- Do not infer agreement from silence or assign someone work they did not accept without the authority to do so.
