Resume work after an interruption

To recover focus after an interruption, start with a place to resume. Leave a short checkpoint before a planned break, then check what changed before continuing.

Leave a place to restart #

Before a planned break from complex work, save the work and leave a short note where you will find it on return. Include the next unfinished action and enough context to recognise it. Do not delay an urgent interruption to finish the note.

Research has tested a related ready-to-resume plan under anticipated time pressure. It does not establish this five-field note as a proven way to resume faster.

Keep five useful lines #

Keep these five lines: Goal — what you are trying to finish. Verified state — what you have checked. Open question — what remains unresolved. Next action — the first unfinished step. Resume pointer — the file, section, query or test to reopen.

Include a fragile result if losing it would force you to repeat work. Stop when you can recover the task; a full diary may take more effort than the note saves.

Save requests that can wait #

When a request can wait, record who needs what, where to find the request and any real deadline. Leave enough information for a later decision without starting the research or solution.

If it meets your urgent-response rule, handle or escalate it. A note alone is not a response to an urgent request.

Check the state before continuing #

On return, open the saved location. Check whether the work, requirements or last verified result changed while you were away. Someone else may already have completed the next step. Continue only when the recorded action still fits.

If the note is missing, unclear or out of date, widen the review. After a long absence or for safety-critical work, a fuller check may be necessary. Reading less is not a success if you resume from the wrong state.

Use reminders for real commitments #

If forgetting to act is the main risk, put the action in a reliable reminder or task system. Include enough context to carry it out, and keep the system available and checked.

Completing a task after an alert shows supported execution. It does not prove that you would remember to start unaided or that you know how to perform it. Keep dependable reminders for real duties; test unaided remembering separately when needed.

Check the return, not just the note #

After several interruptions, check whether you resumed the right task, whether the next action still made sense and how much work you had to reconstruct. Track restart time if that matters. Simplify or drop a note that takes more effort than it saves.

The linked worked case offers a local five-field checkpoint tool without an account or saved profile. It is an example to try, not experimental evidence that this routine saves time.
